Smart Reporting has entered into a landmark partnership with the healthcare company Solventum (formerly 3M Health Care). SmartReports, the groundbreaking software for creating synoptic diagnostic reports, will integrate the all-in-one speech and artificial intelligence (AI) powered solution from Solventum. Areas of application include dermatology and gynecology as sub-specialties in pathology. Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL) is the first client to use Smart Reporting and Solventum for Pathology reporting within their network of hospitals, which includes Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree University Hospital, the Royal Liverpool Hospital, and Broadgreen Hospital. For Smart Reporting, this marks its continuous expansion in the UK market and its commercial launch into pathology, recently becoming a market leader in synoptic reporting in radiology.

As the largest provider of pathology services in the counties of Cheshire and Merseyside and nationally, LCL screens more than five million samples for disease each year. Plans include using SmartReports to support the workflow of the entire pathology department, facilitating the creation of synoptic reports via voice input. Synoptic reports reduce the variability of diagnostic reports, improve clinical workflows, and enable the consistent adoption of medical guidelines.
As a software product for efficient daily use, SmartReports offers full flexibility: For voice input during reporting, Solventum’s MModal Fluency speech recognition solutions (real-time voice processing and voice-driven documentation) are integrated into SmartReports for LCL. For guideline-based reporting, SmartReports provides templates for Gastro Intestinal (GI), gynaecology, breast, urology, and skin. These templates are based on the RCPath proformas, adapted to local requirements in collaboration with the LCL pathologists. With time constraints and inconsistencies in reporting being major challenges of pathologists, SmartReports offers a solution that reduces the pathologists’ reporting time, enhances their reporting quality, and effectively improves patient outcomes through better data.
Smart Reporting and Solventum increase efficiency in pathology
“The collaboration between Solventum and Smart Reporting offers unique advantages. We are extending our open technology approach to pathology with the integration of Solventum’s MModal Fluency speech recognition, voice control, and transcription solutions into SmartReports. Using SmartReports, as we are doing now at LCL, enables a seamless and efficient workflow for pathologists. Hospitals benefit from the ability to produce faster reports and achieve higher-quality diagnostics.
This enables better therapy decisions, leading to optimised patient care,” explains Wieland Sommer, founder and CEO of Smart Reporting. “Solventum is thrilled to announce our unique partnership with Smart Reporting, poised to revolutionise pathology across the UK. By merging our innovative strengths, we elevate care quality to unprecedented heights. We are proud to collaborate with Smart Reporting and LCL on this initiative, showcasing our commitment to supporting the NHS. Together, we are leveraging AI-powered NLU technology and cutting-edge synoptic reporting to provide exceptional patient care,” said Alex Johnston, Country Leader UK and Ireland at Solventum. The partnership between Solventum and Smart Reporting in the UK is designed for the long term. In the future, both companies see the potential for expanded collaborations aimed at AI-supported workflows for further automation, for example, to address the shortage of pathologists and other challenges in healthcare systems worldwide.
