Smart Reporting has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Fluency for Imaging (FFI), the radiology reporting and workflow platform used widely across the United States. Following the close of the transaction, both teams and their technologies will unite under a new entity, Jacobian™, a company focused on advancing AI-powered diagnostic imaging reporting and workflow automation.

Founded in 2014 by radiologists, Smart Reporting develops standardized, structured reporting tools enhanced with AI-based clinical knowledge graphs. Fluency for Imaging brings front-end speech recognition, natural language understanding and deep integration with RIS/PACS environments. The combination aims to address increasing reporting demands as exam volumes rise and staffing shortages continue across radiology.

AI-Enabled Workflow Integration

Jacobian™ will consolidate key capabilities from both organizations:

Fluency for Imaging

  • Market-leading speech recognition and natural language understanding: Five-time Best in KLAS - Speech Recognition: Front-End Imaging.
  • Natural language understanding, templates, macros and automation
  • Broad integrations across RIS, PACS and enterprise reporting environments

Smart Reporting

  • Standardized, computable reporting created by radiologists
  • Integration of EHR data, modality signals and AI outputs
  • Tools supporting guideline-aligned reporting and quality analytics

By merging these components, Jacobian™ intends to deliver a single environment designed to reduce reporting variability, streamline workflow, and support radiologists’ clinical decision-making.

Aiming to Address Workflow Fragmentation in Radiology

Smart Reporting and FFI have collaborated for two years on joint innovation projects. The formation of Jacobian™ brings together intellectual property, engineering teams and data modeling capabilities to support responsible AI adoption at scale.

“With significant investment, a clear focus on diagnostic imaging, and an exceptional leadership team, Jacobian™ is committed to writing the next chapter of innovation for FFI,” said Prof. Dr. Wieland Sommer, Founder of Smart Reporting. “We will strengthen FFI’s leadership position by bringing cutting-edge GenAI right into the known FFI environment, helping radiologists work faster, better, and more consistently - without disruption - and in a way that keeps their expertise at the center. In summary: Same people. Same dedication. More capability.”

Russ Cardwell, VP of Sales, U.S., Fluency for Imaging, emphasized the impact on users: "This will take our deep, client-first commitment to the next level and deliver faster innovation. Jacobian™  is focused on enabling radiologists to thrive and drive diagnostic excellence for every patient by improving reporting speed and consistency without sacrificing quality.”

Leadership and Global Operations

Jacobian™ will operate globally with headquarters in Munich and Pittsburgh, serving customers across North America, Europe and Australia. Combined, the organization will process more than 80 million examinations annually. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2025, with further details planned for RSNA 2025 at booth #1729.
