Sectra, an international leader in medical imaging IT and cybersecurity, has announced that Guelph General Hospital is the first healthcare institution in Canada to adopt its digital pathology module as part of the Sectra One Cloud service. The expansion of their cloud-based imaging infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance diagnostic precision, interdepartmental collaboration, and overall patient care.

“Integrating digital pathology into our existing platform will improve diagnostic quality and turnaround times while enabling tighter collaboration between radiology and pathology,” said Dr. Chris Ma, Chief of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Guelph General Hospital. “This unified approach will ultimately contribute to better patient outcomes.”

By complementing traditional microscope use with digital tools, Guelph General Hospital is enabling remote and instant access to high-resolution tissue images, streamlining workflows and opening the door to AI-assisted diagnostics. The integrated system connects pathologists and radiologists on a shared platform, allowing for faster communication and more informed clinical decisions—particularly critical in complex cases like oncology.

The Sectra pathology module, part of the company’s enterprise imaging solution, provides a scalable, modular architecture designed to support diagnostics across specialties. With a vendor-neutral archive (VNA) at its core, the platform enables hospitals to expand imaging capabilities seamlessly, without the need for multiple back-end systems.

“Collaboration between disciplines is essential in modern diagnostics,” said Nader Soltani, President of Sectra Canada. “By pioneering digital pathology within Sectra One Cloud, Guelph General Hospital is once again setting the pace in Canadian healthcare innovation.”

The hospital extended its existing Sectra cloud agreement—originally established in October 2023—to include the pathology module in April 2025, reinforcing its commitment to long-term digital transformation.
