Regional deployment covers three hospitals

Lunit will expand the deployment of its AI-powered mammography solution, Lunit INSIGHT MMG, across Sweden’s Stockholm Region, where it will serve as an independent second reader in breast cancer screening. The implementation will cover three institutions: Capio Saint Göran Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital and Södersjukhuset (Sös).

The deployment is being carried out in collaboration with medical imaging company Sectra. Once fully implemented, the system is expected to support between 200,000 and 250,000 examinations annually.

Clinical experience at Saint Göran underpins expansion

The regional rollout builds on several years of clinical evaluation and routine use at Capio Saint Göran Hospital. Since the solution was adopted in 2023, it has supported approximately 200,000 examinations over three years, according to Lunit.

The company said the system has continued to support screening workflows through changes in mammography systems. Its implementation at Saint Göran progressed from prospective clinical evaluation to routine breast cancer screening.

The initial evaluation included ScreenTrustCAD, a prospective population-based study conducted at Saint Göran involving more than 55,000 women. The study evaluated the solution in real-world breast cancer screening.

One-year real-world results presented at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2024 Annual Meeting showed:

  • 15% increase in cancer detection
  • more than 36% reduction in radiologists’ reading time

From clinical evaluation to routine screening

The Stockholm deployment extends an approach previously evaluated and implemented at a single hospital to a broader regional screening environment.

Karin Dembrower of Capio Saint Göran Hospital described the regional expansion as an important next step: "Building on this progression from clinical research to routine implementation and real-world validation, the expansion across Stockholm Region represents an important next step. It brings an approach first evaluated and implemented at a single hospital to a broader regional breast cancer screening environment."

Lunit CEO Brandon Suh said the expansion reflects the progression from prospective clinical research to routine clinical use and regional implementation. "Stockholm is a powerful example of how rigorous clinical evidence can translate into real-world adoption and ultimately broader healthcare implementation. What began as a prospective clinical study has grown into routine clinical use and is now expanding to a regional scale. We believe this evidence-to-adoption journey demonstrates the role clinically validated AI can play in building more effective and sustainable cancer screening programs worldwide."
