NHS Trusts Consolidate Imaging Systems in Cloud Environment
Six NHS Trusts in north central London have signed a contract with Sectra to implement its enterprise imaging solution as a fully managed cloud service. According to Sectra, the agreement will support approximately 1.4 million patients by consolidating seven separate imaging systems into a unified cloud-based platform.
The Trusts, operating under the collaborative initiative ImageWise, aim to create a shared and secure infrastructure to support coordinated imaging services and clinical workflows across the region.
Sectra One Cloud: Managed Service for Imaging IT and Cybersecurity
Sectra One Cloud is a fully managed service in which Sectra is responsible for system operation, maintenance, and support. The solution includes:
- Continuous system monitoring and optimization
- Regular updates and upgrades
- High availability and operational resilience
- Scalable infrastructure to manage increasing imaging volumes
By centralizing imaging IT in a cloud environment, the Trusts seek to reduce operational complexity and strengthen cybersecurity across organizations.
“It’s inspiring to see these hospitals take this important step toward a more secure and connected imaging service. When multiple hospital Trusts move together into a shared cloud environment, it strengthens regional resilience and supports secure collaboration across organizational boundaries, helping improve patient care across London,” said Jane Rendall, Managing Director for Sectra UK and Ireland.
Initial Scope: Radiology and Breast Imaging
Under the five-year contract, valued at GBP 15.6 million, the Trusts will initially deploy modules for:
- Radiology imaging
- Breast imaging
The platform is designed to expand over time, allowing integration of additional imaging specialties as clinical and operational needs evolve.
Enterprise Imaging Strategy and Workflow Integration
Sectra’s enterprise imaging solution provides a unified platform for managing medical imaging data across departments. Built around a vendor-neutral archive (VNA), the system enables healthcare providers to:
- Consolidate imaging data across specialties
- Support cross-site collaboration
- Improve access to imaging information across care pathways
- Scale imaging services as demand grows
This approach aligns with broader NHS efforts to modernize imaging infrastructure, enhance data security, and improve interoperability across healthcare systems.
Supporting Regional Collaboration and Patient Care
By transitioning to a shared cloud-based imaging environment, the ImageWise collaboration aims to strengthen coordination between Trusts and streamline imaging workflows. The unified platform is intended to support more efficient service delivery and facilitate secure data sharing across organizational boundaries.
