Athens-Limestone Hospital Adds MRI Services for Patients with Cardiac Devices

Athens-Limestone Hospital has introduced MRI services for patients with pacemakers and implantable defibrillators, expanding access to specialized diagnostic imaging in Limestone County and across North Alabama.

The hospital joins Huntsville Hospital and Madison Hospital in offering MRI imaging for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), extending the capability beyond Madison County for the first time within Huntsville Hospital Health System (HH Health).

According to HH Health, the expansion is supported by remote programming technology that allows radiology teams to collaborate with cardiac device specialists in real time during MRI procedures.

Remote Programming Supports MRI Workflow

Historically, MRI examinations for patients with pacemakers and implantable defibrillators have been limited because of concerns that magnetic fields could interfere with device functionality. While MRI-compatible cardiac devices have become increasingly common, many MRI procedures still required on-site technical support from device specialists, which could delay imaging appointments.

HH Health stated that its remote programming solution enables specially trained radiology teams to connect directly with cardiac device specialists during MRI scans. The technology allows eligible cardiac devices to be adjusted remotely for imaging procedures without requiring specialists to be physically present.

According to the health system, this approach is intended to help reduce delays in diagnostic imaging and improve patient access to MRI services closer to home.

Expanding Access to Diagnostic Imaging

MRI remains an important imaging modality for evaluating a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Cancer
  • Neurological disorders
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Orthopedic injuries

The addition of cardiac device-compatible MRI services at Athens-Limestone Hospital is expected to reduce the need for patients in Limestone County to travel outside the region for advanced imaging.

“This addition is a prime example of our health system working as it should — reducing barriers, expanding access and bringing more advanced care directly to the communities we serve,” said Sam Dean, executive vice president of regional hospital operations for HH Health. “By strategically leveraging innovation and collaboration across our hospitals, we are making it easier for more patients to receive excellent care without leaving North Alabama,” Dean added.

Local Imaging Teams Led the Initiative

Athens-Limestone Hospital President Traci Collins said the hospital’s imaging and radiology departments played a central role in implementing the service expansion.

“This is a meaningful step forward for our patients and community,” Collins said. “Our Imaging and Radiology teams worked together to bring this technology to Athens-Limestone, helping reduce delays and ensuring more patients in Limestone County and across our region can receive critical diagnostic care when they need it most.”

Huntsville Hospital Health System serves more than 1.5 million people across northern Alabama and southern Tennessee and employs more than 21,000 people.

The expansion reflects ongoing efforts among healthcare systems to improve access to MRI imaging for patients with cardiac devices through workflow integration, remote support technologies, and specialized radiology collaboration.
